N&amp;N juntamente com MFAs s\u00e3o considerados a plataforma tecnol\u00f3gica do s\u00e9culo XXI a qual ir\u00e1 desempenhar um importante papel na sociedade moderna. A evolu\u00e7\u00e3o cont\u00ednua de cada \u00e1rea do conhecimento no sentido de investigar a mat\u00e9ria em escalas cada vez menores levou ao surgimento da tem\u00e1tica conhecida como Nanoci\u00eancia e Nanotecnologia. Essa nova perspectiva est\u00e1 fundamentada primariamente na fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de estruturas de materiais onde ao menos uma das tr\u00eas dimens\u00f5es est\u00e1 na escala nanom\u00eatrica. O efeito de tamanho nanom\u00e9trico confere aos materiais propriedades e fun\u00e7\u00f5es bastante diferenciadas em compara\u00e7\u00e3o a sua forma macrosc\u00f3pica. Por outro lado, os MFAs compreendem tanto os novos materiais quanto os j\u00e1 existentes, mas com altera\u00e7\u00f5es que propiciam desempenho superior em suas funcionalidades para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es tecnol\u00f3gicas. Um melhor entendimento, desenvolvimento, manipula\u00e7\u00e3o e aplica\u00e7\u00e3o desse conhecimento\/tecnologia requer quase sempre o envolvimento de um conhecimento interdisciplinar.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Realmente, muitos avan\u00e7os na engenharia, na medicina, na gera\u00e7\u00e3o e transmiss\u00e3o de energia e mesmo na computa\u00e7\u00e3o somente se concretizam com o desenvolvimento da N&amp;N aplicados em MFAs que apresentem as propriedades e funcionalidades necess\u00e1rias para um dado fim. Por exemplo, um novo motor a jato desenvolvido pela engenharia aeroespacial pode requerer o desenvolvimento de superligas ou nanocomp\u00f3sitos com retardantes \u00e0 chama capazes de suportar o calor excessivo e estresse; um processador mais r\u00e1pido para computa\u00e7\u00e3o, pode requerer novos materiais semicondutores, uma pr\u00f3tese que garanta mobilidade a um paciente pode requerer pol\u00edmeros, comp\u00f3sitos \u00a0e ligas met\u00e1licas diferenciadas.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hoje, pensando na N&amp;N e MFAs aplicados em v\u00e1rios setores da sociedade como sa\u00fade, energia, computa\u00e7\u00e3o e o meio ambiente, as melhores Universidades e Institutos de Pesquisa do mundo desenvolvem intensos estudos buscando solu\u00e7\u00f5es para o desenvolvimento econ\u00f4mico, social e a sustentabilidade ambiental. Dessa forma, essa tecnologia se relaciona com v\u00e1rias \u00e1reas do conhecimento como por exemplo, a qu\u00edmica, a f\u00edsica, a biologia, as engenharias, a medicina, tecnologia da informa\u00e7\u00e3o e parte das ci\u00eancias humanas.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As linhas de pesquisa em Nanoci\u00eancia &amp; Nanotecnologia e Materiais Funcionais Avan\u00e7ados podem ser consideradas como genuinamente interdisciplinares, levando a colabora\u00e7\u00e3o entre os pesquisadores em \u00e1reas previamente d\u00edspares para interc\u00e2mbio de conhecimentos, modelos, ferramentas e t\u00e9cnicas. Realmente, a compreens\u00e3o do conhecimento na interface entre f\u00edsica, qu\u00edmica, ci\u00eancia e engenharia dos materiais, microeletr\u00f4nica, bioqu\u00edmica e biotecnologia requer uma
